Initially, I was not sure that it was a good idea to photograph again Swan Lake after the huge media noise caused by the film “Black Swan” with Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis, and the flow of images that come with an Academy Award.
What attracted me in the proposal of the Ballet of St. Petersburg, it’s the production opposite to what the film shows us. Minimalist scenography, classical costumes and lights and the true choreography created by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov at the Mariinsky Theater, in St. Petersburg, more than one century ago.
With all these ingredients, Irina Kolesnikova takes the best to create her Odette: If she performs high arabesques and perfect attitudes, her dance is never an athletic demonstration. It’s complex poetry, lyrical. Nina Alovert from Ballet Magazine resume the atmosphere perfectly : “Her Odile is not a seductive beauty, but a magical bird, full of triumph. By simply standing next to von Rothbart, without taking her eyes off the Prince, the atmosphere around her becomes charged.”
